In the autumn we put about 20 dahlia plants away for the winter. Dusted them with sulphur and stored in a dark dry place. I have now retrieved them and to me they look a sorry sight - quite dried up and lifeless! However I have potted them on with just the stem sticking out. My question is should I water them and when should I hope to see some signs of life?
If you are past your last frost, put them outside and water them. They should start growing quickly.

I have dahlia bulbs to plant which will hopefully cover an unsightly wall together with some sunflowers. As these will provide colour I'm looking for some greenery in front of it and also to act as a natural border what would you suggest? It does not get full sun (photo attached). Any help would be much appreciated as I'm a novice gardener.

Hello, Is it possible to dig up dahlia plants during the growing season? I'm not happy with the spot they are in right now. The shoots are very tiny still, only a few inches. That's a bit small, considering its already June. I think I planted the tubers too deep (6-7 inches) and too late (Late April-early May). Also, I feel like they are not getting enough sunlight, so I'd like to replant them in a nice big pot. Should I dig them up? If so, how? Should I just leave them and wait? What do you suggest? Thank you.
This will, always, be best during dormancy. Doing so now will stunt them, severely.

an spread. Is this true? This is my first time growing dahlias and placed them in a big pot with drainage holes. I water it once a week - typically stop watering once the water drips through the bottom. The dahlias are placed in a sunny location, about 3-4+ hours of direct sunlight. I am not sure about the soil conditions.
That soil looks very thick and wet. This will not be good for any plant, and will cause diseases, as you have found out.
You will need to use fresh potting soil, but not topsoil. This article will help:

You may want to keep fungicides around:

Watering is best done when needed, rather than on schedule. Use a meter if you are unsure of dryness at the 2 or 3 inch depth mark. This article will help:

The stems on my dahlias are disentgrating a couple of inches below the ground. There's green starts below the spot.
There appears to be quite a bit of algae growth. This tells me that the soil remains too wet and compact for plants to grow comfortably. You may have to amend the area, or try and grow these in container. Here are some articles that will help:

Hi. I started my Dahlia's from tubers I purchased this spring. They are in large to med. large pots. It has taken them 3 months to get to where they have flower bulbs coming out but it is Mid August now (I planted 3rd week in May)and the buds seem so small . No flowers yet! I live in Alberta Canada and only have a few weeks left of summer weather. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you
It is going to be a chore to get them to grow in your zone. You are well outside of their native range, so a good portion of the plant's year will be spent under lighting indoors.

Any idea what variety of dahlia this is? I've looked all over the internet and still can't find it. Please help and thanks!
The closest that you will get is Dahlia pinnata. Pinning down a cultivar will prove, near, impossible without genetic labwork.
