Zoysia grass is pushing up in the blacktop of my driveway from my neighbor's yard. At first it was along the edge where there were some small cracks. Now the growth is starting to push up spots of blacktop where there are no cracks, about 4" in from the lawn are "push up" mounds and sprouts starting through. What can I do to stop this invasion?

Zoysia grass is dying in large patches and all the grass has yellow stripes on it. Grass is being watered and has also been sprayed with insecticide and pesticide. Nothing seems to be working and spray techs don't have a solution. There is also a lot of new construction in the neighborhood with cement dust everywhere. The weather has been hot and dry with very little rain. Trying to find out the problem and a solution.
This is a pattern seen in zoysia grass when it is extremely dry and under fertilized. Water and a nitrogen rich fertilizer should help restore the lawn.
I have a shade garden with small lawn of zoysia, about three years old. This spring the grass is apparently dying in areas where it was been green and lush until now. I've researched the various problems with this grass but can't find a similar condition. Grass seems sparse, thin, dying, and I found some toadstools in the bad areas. I questioned pythium blight, but am not sure. And I don't know what to do to keep it from spreading. Heat and humidity have been prevalent this spring and we may have been watering too frequently. I just don't know what to do about it now when it has looked so good in years past. I could send you a picture! Have any thoughts?
It sounds like a fungus, maybe brown patch but there are many others it could be. The toadstools, humidity and frequent watering are all indications of a fungus. First, allow the grass to dry out some as fungal spores thrive in moist conditions. Then treat the area with a fungicide. In choosing fungicides, you may need to select one targeted to the specific problem, as they work differently. That being said, conditions such as brown patch can be treated effectively with Banner, Daconil or Bayleton fungicide. Zoysia lawn developed dollar spot fungus which has spread. Have applied fungicide twice. Left with large brown grass with some bare places. Applied triple 13 in April. Have irrigation system and am watering three times a week at 5 a.m. Average day temps in high 90's and night time lows in upper 70's. Currently mowing at 1 1/2 inches. Can I fertilize again now to get things back on track? What fertilizer should I use? Any other suggestions?

We want to resod with zoysia grass. We are having a very hot summer. Is the summer a bad time to resod? When is the best time of year to resod? Thank you in advance for your reply.
You should not sow or plant anything in summer. The heat from summer lesses the chances of survival as the roots are unable to establish. You want to resod in cooler temps, preferably early spring or fall.
Do you have tips for eliminating weeds from new Zoysia sod? The Zoysia sod was planted about six weeks ago. It is chock full of weeds of every kind. I have been hand pulling but it is ridiculously time consuming and sore my hands besides. It would take 100-200 hours to weed my smallish-medium front lawn. I have been told that chemical treatment in the first year will damage the sod. Any suggestions for me? Kind of discouraging to spring for new sod and then have all these weeds. I will say that it is nice and green, and looks good when mowed if you don't look too close. The other issue with hand pulling weeds is that it leaves divots and bare patches.
I want to make my 3 flower beds into just rock gardens for low maintenance. What would be the best grass and weed killer to get down to the roots of zoysia? My lawn is zoysia and it got in the flower beds. I was going to spray them every 3 or 4 days, but not sure what to kill it with. I am not going to plant any other kind of plants in the beds. I thought I would wait till next spring to put in the rock, and does putting 3 layers of newspaper under the rock help keep out weeds and grass? My nephew lays tar paper down first, the kind they use on the roof. Would that work better or does it help at all? Thank you for your time.
Zoysia grass is a very invasive grass. It can be difficult to control. Small areas of Zoysia can be treated with a non-selective type herbicide, such as Round-up. However, this type of herbicide can potentially kill any plant it comes in contact with, so be careful when spraying around plants you want to keep!
For best results, apply the herbicide when the Zoysia grass is still green, actively growing and not dormant or under drought stress. Since Zoysia grass may regrow, more than one application will probably be needed. Since Round-up dissipates rather quickly, it shouldn't pose any problems with future planting.
