Two questions, if I may:
First, in regard to the article on your site about the issues related to climate, how does the climate rate for the southern part of Northern California?
Secondly, when is the optimal time to plant/grow zoysia?
Thank you for your time and consideration to my requests.
1. It should be fine for your area.
2. Spring is normally the best time to plant it.
What causes black spots in my zoysia grass? I recently discovered black spots in my zoysia grass this month in December.
It is a grass fungus, perhaps Necrotic Ring Spot. This article will help:

Planted Geo zoysia first of October. When can I use weed control? Spray or granular? Can I put down pre-emergent for crabgrass? Sod is still dormant to this point.
Proper mowing, irrigation and fertilizing will reduce weed problems.
For best results from your new sod and a fertilizer have a soil test performed on your lawn and fertilize accordingly.

For weed problems follow all directions for any herbicide, improper use could damage or kill your Geo. Geo Zoysia is tolerant of most herbicides.

We live in a warm climate and love our Empire zoysia turf. Problem is, as delivered, it came contaminated with some Sir Walter. So we have patches of broad leaf Sir Walter in our yard and it seems to be more invasive and is taking over. Can you recommend a method to kill off the Walter? Spray or otherwise?
The article below will give you many natural methods on how to kill the Sir Walter grass invading your lawn. I would try these natural methods first before resorting to chemical measures. If none of these natural methods work, you could try spraying small areas of the Sir Walter with glyphosate but you run the risk of harming your zoysia turf in the process.
Thanks for the response. Love the idea of using vinegar. We'll try a small test section to get the hang of it.
Read in my magazine of this lawn called zoysia with plugs you plant every 6 inches.
Here are a few links with information about Zoysia grass.
This may help to further your research and determine if Zoysia is the right choice for you.
I also would recommend you inquire with your local extension office. They should have information about good grass and lawn choices for your exact area.

I'm wanting to plant zoysia grass from the seed. Do I need to put down straw when doing so? I'm planning on roto tilling the area. I'm wanting to seed and laying down plenty of zoysia seed. Any thought on how to get it to grow the best I can?
Yes, you should cover the seeded area with straw to retail soil moisture during the germination period. For guidelines on how to seed your lawn along with watering recommendations to help establish your grass root system, please visit the following extension website:

Clover patches in a few spots and dark green half circle that mushrooms popped up in last fall. What do I do to get rid of both problems?
Clover can be removed by hand or the use of a herbicide.
Mushrooms are not detrimental to your lawn, but can be eliminated with a fungicide.
