Hello .. I live in NJ and this is my first year trying a small garden. I have patio tomatoes that are doing fine. Basil that is doing fine. My issue is with my lettuce. Early summer it was doing great. I was getting one nice harvest a week for a few weeks and all was well. Then the lettuce started to taste a little funny. Hard to describe but just not right. It also started to get really tall. Not sure if that is how his plant is suppose to grow. Its so tall that I need to stake it. Hoping you can help me understand if this is how this lettuce is suppose to grow. See pictures. Thanks for your help and stay well.
This happens in response to warm weather, and lengthening days. It will attempt to go to seed, and elongate, while turning very bitter.
It is not very good after this point.

My Daughter had great luck with lettuce this year - one plant looks like it has gone to seed. She cut off a portion but I am not sure where the seed is. This portion has not flowered yet. Are the seeds in the flower? Thanks for your help.
No. The flower needs to form and finish. After this, the seed pods will swell and release seeds. Unfortunately, once the flower spike is cut off, the lettuce is no longer productive. The plant should be discarded at this point. Starting from fresh seed will be the best option from here.

I live in Northern New Jersey about an hour outside of NYC. I have seeds for lettuce, cabbage, spinach, and other leafy greens. I am putting the seeds in tomorrow, September 5. Should I just not bother or go for it?
You are in USDA planting zone 6. Our experts say you can plant into late summer, so I'd say go for it right away.

If I follow the instruction on the package and sow lettuce seeds 1/2" deep, my seedlings are spiny and weak. I tried planting them deeper and find that they will take much longer to germinate or none at all. How do I go about getting strong healthy seedlings. Thank you
This comes down to the amount of light that they are receiving. Spindly plants will indicate that they need more light. If these are under horticultural light, be sure that they fixture is close enough to the plants to support strong growth. If these are LED, be sure that they are full spectrum, and not just only red and blue.

What diameter do you recommend for a hanging basket of lettuce as described in your web page of March.
A 14 or 20 inch wire basket will be easy to find and handle. Some include the coco liner or you can buy those separately.

Trying to figure Out when or if you cut lettuce bolt off. If you cut it before gets very long will that save lettuce from getting bitter? What do you with bolt and are seeds in bolt ok to plant
No, the bolting process is a symptom, not the cause of bitterness. The only thing that you can do is plant when temperatures are cooler, and will remain that way.
