Q.Green Leaf Lettuce Plant

Zone 07726 | mar143agr added on July 19, 2020 | Answered

Hello .. I live in NJ and this is my first year trying a small garden. I have patio tomatoes that are doing fine. Basil that is doing fine. My issue is with my lettuce. Early summer it was doing great. I was getting one nice harvest a week for a few weeks and all was well. Then the lettuce started to taste a little funny. Hard to describe but just not right. It also started to get really tall. Not sure if that is how his plant is suppose to grow. Its so tall that I need to stake it. Hoping you can help me understand if this is how this lettuce is suppose to grow. See pictures. Thanks for your help and stay well.

This happens in response to warm weather, and lengthening days. It will attempt to go to seed, and elongate, while turning very bitter.

It is not very good after this point.
