Our bougainvillea in front of house is about 10 years old. I know someone kept cutting it back before we moved in and I’m not sure you are meant to cut bougainvillea back? Either way now it looks dry and sad and has few flowers. See pics. Thanks
It sounds like your bougainvillea may need some fertilizer. You may also want to do a soil test to see if it's getting the proper nutrition. This plant likes acidic soil. Check to see if your pH balance is somewhere between 5.5 to 6.

why are my bougainvillea leaves turning black
This could be sooty mold or black spot fungus. Here's more:

THis Bouganvilla is on a West facing patio in Frisco, TX. It's April 10, I"ve heard I should trim back for thick flowers, or is this one good as it sits? Also, is compost (garage made with coffee, juicing pulp - red beets, grapes, oranges, spinach, carrots, potting soil) good for feed, or do I still need a good flower fertilizer? Thanks for any help! Greg
That one looks like it has already been pruned, and is recovering from the last one. Pruning now will be unnecessary. This article will help you to prune it once it is time:

Making your compost inside requires careful attention. Cold composting requires the correct microbes or worms for proper breakdown of the organic compounds. If you are using heat to compost, then make sure that it is getting hot enough to pasteurize. This article will help you to compost indoors:

This plant is a heavy feeder, so you may opt for an all purpose fertilizer, instead. This article will offer more tips on the care of the plant:

My bougainvilla was in a fairly large pot and rootbound. It's growing but no blooms yet.
That depends on the care that it receives, but should not be more than 2 years. Usually, a single season of flower loss should be expected with the best care.
Here is an article that will give some tips on the care that it will need:

I have 4 Bougainvillea plants that are about 1 year old. I have a watering system setup so they can get as much water as they need but I don't want to over water. I am now watering once every three days for 6 minutes. Too little? Too much? What do my plants need to become more healthy??? Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide!
Their environment does not look ideal. There is competition from grass or weeds and the soil looks like it needs compost worked in. Bougainvillea only need water when they start to wilt and the soil is dry, so watering on a schedule may be too much.

I live in central California and in the spring my bougainvillea blooms profusely! Then it tends to quit blooming but continues to grow and look healthy. Is it a watering issue? Too much or not enough? Should I fertilize?
The lack of water can force blooming as the plant tries to develop seeds in case of death so, try not to over-water as that can inhibit flower production. Also, make sure that you are not using a high nitrogen fertilizer as that produces lots of nice green foliage and few/no flowers. A potted Bougainvillea can be thoroughly watered but then wait for top soil to dry a little bit before watering again. Local environmental conditions may require tweaking that.
Insufficient sunlight, transplanting, too much high nitrogen fertilizer or too much water will do that.
I have a problem with my bougainvillea. I give it water every 4 days. It’s in a position with a lot of sun. The weather here is hot (33-36 Celsius). I bought it a few days ago and even though its in good health, at the points where new plants should grow I noticed this problem (photos). What should I do?
I don't see the problem unless you are referring to the thorns, and those are normal. There is nothing to do.
