the leaves The fig buds arrived late, and they are 1/3rd the size of an edible fig. Unless i take action I think they will stay very small whilst the leaves get ever larger. Pending a soil test, you may find that there is not enough phosphorus and potassium, or too much nitrogen. This can be corrected by adding phosphorus and potassium. Otherwise, unless you are certain that it is a cultivar that is self fertile, it may need pollination.

I have a fig tree, in very poor chalk soil, in a very sunny, south west facing spot, plated on a slope but still produces a lot of figs. the first crop finishes, and then in late summer, we get a huge amount of new figs crowing but they dont get big, just stay small and green. what can I do?
After testing the soil, it sounds like it needs a little fertilizer. Once you find out, exactly, what is missing or lacking, then you can correct the issue. Adding compost to the area will help, as well as adding earthworms. They will incorporate the compost in, and around the tree. Here are some articles that will help:

. This year the leaves are healthy but no figs. What I can do? Someone told me to add Boron and micronutrients to the soil in th e Fall. Thank you for all your help! . I have a fig tree about 4-5 years old and never produced any figs. Last year the leaves turned yellow and it was all over the tree. This year the leaves are healthy but no figs. What I can do? This year the leaves are healthy, green, but no fruit at all. Someone told me to add Boron and micronutrients to the soil in the Fall. Thank you for all your help!
Id does sound like the soil nutrition needs to be adjusted. Test the soil, first, to find out what is missing.

Once you add what is missing, or what is off, then all it will take is proper care:
I love my fig tree but not the figs. My fig tree produces a moderate amount of figs each year. Last year for some reason unknown to me it didn’t produce any fruit. It was great! This year it made up for lost time and produced thousands of figs. The tree is about 20’ tall with a big spread. Is there anything I can do to reduce or eliminate fig production? I really don’t want to cut it down. The figs have become quite a nuisance.
There are hormone regulators that "sterilize" the tree. Here is more:

The center main branches are getting to tall to pick, (10-12 ft).
You can shorten the tree by pruning out all but your selected fruiting branches. Here is how:

My fig tree last year had about 5 great figs, this year the figs were very small and ripened too soon. Now, no figs and it b is starting to get a lot of new leaves. What can be wrong. I\'m in California zone 8. Is it going to have another crop of figs. Sho<ld I prune it?
It sounds like there may be too much nitrogen in your soil. A test will confirm.

Using large heavy steel poles and arch
You won't be able to force it to elongate, but you can shape how it bends, or prune it into a smaller form at the expense of flowers and fruit.
