It is indoor tree but has been on front porch for summer where it has grown very tall and much fuller.
Those are aerial roots and they are very common in ficus. This article explains:

I am not certain about the name of this plant but my son bought it at Ikea years ago and i think it was some sort of bonsai ficus tree? As you can see from the picture, it is growing sideways. There are several cut off branches and my question is if leaves will ever grow on those branches? Is it ok to cut the whole long branch in half to balance it out? Also, does it look like it needs a bigger pot? Thank you.
Unfortunately, your photos did not come through. I am unable to see the situation. In the meantime, this collection of articles will help:
Hi. My braided ficus has four trunks, and one of them is dead - I didn’t notice it when I brought her home. I’ve had her for over a year, and she’s doing fine. Should I remove it or leave it? There is no growth - no branches on it - just a trunk. Thanks!
At this point, if you are leaving it for aesthetics, it won't hurt to do so. At some point, it will be smaller than the other branches in the braid, so at some point it will look a bit odd next to the others. You may opt for cutting it once it becomes unsightly.
The choice is yours!

They appear to be insect galls, although I do not recognize the particular gall pattern. Insects will burrow and lay eggs, which creates what you see, here.
Remove them, and treat with an insecticide. It will pose no real harm to the tree.

We live in Darwin on a bush block with poor soil. We were sold a ficus umbellata to put in the garden as a tree. How big do they grow and what conditions do they need? We can’t find a photo of one as a full grown tree so don’t know what it will grow into. Should we just keep it in a pot instead? Thanks.
You can keep it in a pot if you desire. They are most often grown as indoor houseplants. Outside, it needs moist soil and part sun. I couldn't find a photo of one outdoors so you may want to visit a local nursery for more information on growing one outside.
came across 8' ficus trees scheduled for the dump.i don't have room for tall trees,so i cut them back to 3'. will they come back?i also root pruned them accordingly.i grow bonsai as a hobby, but have no experience with ficus trees. they are kept inside. thanks.
Ideally, no more than one-third of the tree should be cut at one time. Check yours to see if you cut right above a node. That is where the new growth will sprout and cover the stump. Here are pruning tips below that should help in the future.

It is a well known fact that the destruction of peat bogs is terrible for the environment.
I didn't see the article you spoke of but our catalog of articles is about 10,000 so you are bound to see references to peat. In some of the newer articles we suggest alternatives, and we have some stand-alone articles like the one below that suggests alternatives:
