Tulip tree planted 6 yrs ago and has doubled in height - now 20 - 25 ft. Last year there was 1 flower(It's first) this year none. How can I get it to flower next year?
Tulip Trees typically don't flower until they are 15 years old.
Many times blooms are way up high in a tree and difficult to see.
Tulip poplar is susceptible to pests including aphids and scale, which are small hard-shelled insects. Both suck juices out of the stems, which might result in poor-quality flowers if infestation is severe.
The trees are also prey to diseases including root and stem rot, powdery mildew and leaf spot. One or more of these problems might reduce or eliminate flower production.

I'd like to grow nothing but Tulips. I live in Oakland, CA. Is that a lot of maintenance & can I grow them in California? Thank you Joyce
We purchased flowering tulips from a shop in Aberdeen, and would like to grow tulips in the same vase. It held approx 14 tulips last year
All tulips will survive, temporarily, in a vase. They are not meant to last more than a year, since they will not have a dormancy with being grown in a vase, so they will not survive too much past that.

I would like to purchase some tulip bulbs, in no particular color, but do not know where to begin. How do I know which company is reputable? Our gardening zone is 4. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Joan

I googled for a 9-9-6 fertilizer and holland bulb booster is the most common. However, on all the sites it's no longer available. Why
I don't know why they would discontinue their specialty fertilizer unless it wasn't a big seller. If you can't find 9-6-6 easily, you can use 5-10-10 or 8-8-8 slow release formulas. We don't recommend brands but be sure to buy it from a reputable source. Here is a different school of thought below:

Okay, thank you! I will clear a sunny garden spot where I plan to plant the bulbs. I have Pro-Mix, Sphagnum Peat Moss, and Compost. Are they the correct things I need for successful blooms in the Spring? I know I should mix something with the soil already in the bed but how much of which should I use? I know I should have at least 5 inches of soil over the top of the bulb when it is planted. I know I should plant them in a sunny area. I have not been successful with tulips before because I did not know these things so I appreciate your help SO much with this planting!
This article gives you those instructions.

with additional topsoil when we do the planting? We're in Salt Lake City, UT. The flower bed faces south and gets shade from big established trees to the south and west.
They need sun so hopefully the trees don't shade them completely or only provide dappled shade. Tulips won't grow well in shade and will rot in poor draining soil.
You can mound it up with topsoil and compost. I am including a newer idea about how to plant tulips on top of the soil, too.
