We don't know the age if this palm tree and as ut is quite close to our house, we want to ensure that it is still safe and foe how much longer it will be safe
It's a beautiful tree. Here is some information on root development which should help. The roots are growing up the trunk, which is normal. If you really need the age, you might call an arborist to come out and inspect the tree.

Our palm tree seems to be splitting down the middle almost, and you can see the leaves are dead on the one sideā¦ What happened to the tree and what do we need to do with it? Is it completely dead?
It's a beautiful tree! I would consult a local arborist and see if it can be saved.

I have moved into a property in England with a large palm tree. The roots appear to be coming out of the ground. Should I build the ground up around it? Is this a sign of bad health? I am worried as we have another palm tree with a hollow base where the roots once were which will be have to be cut down soon!
Those roots are typical abnormalities for palms. However, I will include some information about yellowing leaves. It could be a nutritional problem. A soil sample would identify it.

not sure what type of palm it is but it's quite short and fat at the base anf getting narrower
Unfortunately, your photos did not come through. I am unable to see the damage. Likely, it is not strangling itself, but is the type palm that you have. It may not like the care that it is receiving.
It could be a bottle palm:

f the roots without killing it? This was rhe biggest pot we could get at our local garden centre.
Yes, you can root prune to maintain the size of a plant. Here is how:

Why are leaves curling on my palm plant
This depends on the type of palm, and the environment. Unfortunately, leaf curling has pretty broad range of causes. Under/overwatering, overfeeding, disease, low humidity, high humidity, insect issues, low and high temperature, and many other issues can cause curling depending on the plant type and the environment in which it resides.
This is a 2 year old European Fan palm, that is planted in my yard in a full sun area. There are 2 yellow flowers coming out from the center
A common cause of yellowing in palms is a nutrient deficiency. You can remove the brown fronds, but wait till the yellow fronds turn completely brown before removing them. This variety also prefers a part-shade location.
