    It will take a very long time to get tall, but it will keep stacking leaves on top of each other. They should remain pretty short as long as they are getting proper lighting. It needs to be bright, but not in direct sun. After the blooms fade, they will fall off. You should leave this stem, as they can bloom again under the correct conditions.     If you would like to then it wouldn't hurt. I have many orchids, that I have planted directly into the mix. They do very well with the proper lighting, humidity, and a little weakly mixed orchid fertilizer every few weeks.
