I noticed small white thorn-like textures on my kale leaves in my garden. They are sharp to the touch. Do you know these are? Is this normal/OK to eat? Is it necessary to treat?

July 16, 2015A.I have heard reports of some varieties having these hairy little thorns. They will not harm you and will cook down in the wilting process.

August 13, 2015A.Neem Oil is a good treatment. Use it throughout the growing season.
In severe cases Bt or Bacillus thuringiensis is a good choice.

Labrador Gold CoastQ.insects eating kale leaves
Best way to stop insects from eating Kale leaves. We have a great crop but some leaves are far more eaten than what is left. I've caught numerous leaf hoppers and a couple of grubs, but more is eaten daily. Two plants had scores of baby eggs, mainly in hollows underneath. I wonder if liquid fertilizer may help.

This is generally caused by warm temperatures.
Harvesting is best done before your plant goes to seed.

July 30, 2016A.It's hard to tell from your photo exactly how large your kale leaves are, but from what is showing, it looks like this is perfectly good kale and probably ready to harvest (don't let the leaves get too large or they will turn bitter).
The "prickly" things aren't anything to worry about (the leaves on my kale are slightly pointy as well), and should come right off with a light rinse, or you can simply rub them off before eating your kale.

I have been growing my first herb/veggie garden in raised beds this year and went to harvest some of my kale and it looks like this, just on the one purple plant underneath. Is it rotten?

Certified ExpertA.This looks like a heavy aphid infestation (Mealy Cabbage Aphid most likely), including both the live bugs and their shed exoskeletons. Remove any leaves where you see them and discard far away from the garden. Here are some articles on getting rid of aphids:
