Hello A couple of years ago I bought a Hydrangea seemanii to grow on a north-facing wall. It has established well, but I'd be glad of some advice on how to train it to cover the wall. It has one strong main shoot: if I remove the tip, will this encourage it to spread out? If I pull some of it away from the wall (it is strongly attached by aerial roots) and move them to where I want them to go, will they survive and re-root? Many thanks, Sally
The growth of these plants does not normally require any pruning. Prune only to confine them to their designated area. Cut them back a bit if they are growing on a wall, to encourage them to fully cover the wall without projecting too far out from the wall.
My plant has many leaves, but only 2 or 3 blossoms inside the plant so that you can't see them. It' s planted on the north side of the house in zone 5.

I live in an area that has naturally acidic soil (Portland, OR). I planted a couple hydrangeas last spring, and last year and this year, they're purple, leaning toward the pink side. I know acidic soil changes the color to blue, and that I can add things to the soil to hasten this process. But if I leave the soil around the hydrangeas alone, how long will it take them to naturally turn blue based on the already slightly acidic soil? If you don't intervene in hydrangea color changing, does the process take a few years?
They may need more acid or aluminum to turn the deep blue

We have 5 very large hydrangea plants and within the last two days they have become absolutely covered in what we believe is Hydrangea Scale. There are literally thousands of very small maggot shaped, pure white, almost powdery shapes all over the plants. Can you please tell us what we need to do to get rid of them. Our garden is also full of very mature plants. Is the Scale likely to spread? Many Thanks Philip
Scale can spread.

It bloomed last yr and yr before when it was planted. Beautiful large cream flowers. I did not prune it this year, and, while my hydrangea plants all have blooms starting, I live in westchester county in ny, the tree has lots of healthy green leaves, but no blooms. Help!

Will 16-12-12 slow-release plant food hurt my hydrangea?
This article will help you with fertilizing your Hydrangea.
To not over fertilize with this formulation as you will likely inhibit flowering.

Articles on taking cuttings from a hydrangea bush refer to old wood and new wood flowers. My type of hydrangea has flowers on the end of new wood that emanates from old wood canes. So which do I have? Old wood flowers or new wood flowers? I live in NC and my plant does not freeze back to the ground each winter. The new wood stems are about 6-12 inches long. It seems like a no brainer but I am confused. I want to root the cuttings for adding to my yard. Thanks, Dennis Kost
You want to take the cutting from the lighter colored new growth on the plant, this will be on the tips of the branches. You will want to do this in early fall.
