Hello. Last spring I planted a kogana fubuki Dahlia. It grew beautifully. I wanted to preserve the tubers for separating and planting this season. I lifted, but did not seperate the tubers. When I pulled my tubers out of storage...well, the accompanying photo shows what happened over winter. Is there any way you can tell me in an email how, if it all, I can salvage this beautiful plant? I am just not at all sure where to begin. Thank you.
You have a couple of options.
1) Trim off the sprouts and try rooting them. Rooting compounds increases the odds that roots will develop, so those are worth a try. Snip to 3-5" long, dip into compound and follow package directions.
2) If there are some shorter sprouts on the tubers, don't cut them. Leave them and gently plant the tuber with the sprouts heading upwards in the soil. You'll have to be careful as the sprouts are brittle and easy to break off. Plant under 3-4" of soil and water lightly, just enough to settle the soil around the tuber.
Assuming the plants live, the sprouts will green up remarkably fast, often in just a couple days.
Do I need to limit the dahlias to one tuber per pot? How big should the pot be for one dahlia, or how big for more than one dahlia? Thank You, Anna
Anna,
Dahlias come in a variety of mature sizes - from 12-14" tall to 6 feet tall. You need to consider the mature size of the plant in order to answer your question. I'd allow 1 tuber per 12" pot for most size dahlias and maybe a bit larger pot for a dinner plate or tall variety. Here's some additional info: https://www.leafari.com/dahlia-planting-guide.html
I started several Dahlias from seeds this year. Will they bloom the first year? They are about 2' tall now and I was wondering if I should keep them in pots or plant them in ground after frost in about 10 days. I don't want to put them in my flower garden if they are not going to bloom yet.
It will be a few years before you have flowers.

I've been waiting for the last frost date before planting my new dahlias. While in storage, the eyes have grown significantly, some 12 inches long. How should I plant these dahlias? Should I cut back part of the growth? The growth still looks like the eye, no change to green.
It sounds like you should divide your Dahlia tubers.

Is it (May 9th) still too early to plant dahlia tubers? I live in Milford CT on the shoreline.
You are in zone 6b, your last frost date is around the 10-15 of this month.
Check you weather trends before planting.

I bought two large pots of dahlias from a nursery. There are 3 plants in each pot. I noticed this morning that there is a white fungus on them and I saw a white fly. Should I replant them in separate pots with new soil and treat them with a fungicide? Or can they can stay in the same pot with and treat them?
My Yam Dahlias seem to have an enormous amount of leaf growth. They are starting to flower. Should I thin out the leaves to promote better flowers please
Your plant looks beautiful, I would not trim out the leaves.
