Why do red bird of paradise leaves turn yellow?
There are several reasons why a plant gets yellow leaves. Typically it is a water or fertilizer issue. Make sure that it is getting the right amount of water and is fertilized (especially with iron) is a first step. I have an bird of paradise. My husband sat it outside in the heat of about 94 and it looks like it has gotten burnt. The leaves are dry and burnt looking. What should I do to make the leaves come back to life?
Along with the sunburned leaves, the plant itself may have become dry.
Make sure your watering the plant adequately for the warmer temperature.
Water well, but allow to dry slightly between waterings.
If it's just a few leaves that are damaged, I would trim them away. If the entire plant is suffering, wait to trim to lessen the stress as the plant recovers.
My bird of paradise blooms wither and die before they fully open. How can I prevent this from happening? The plant is about 8 years old, healthy in other ways. It has been fertilized and trimmed around the edge of the plant, leaving about 6 inches of the stalk. It is in full sun.
Your Bird Of Paradise does not shed it's spent flowers and must be dead headed to keep the plant healthy and producing more flowers.
Cut the spent flower off as far down into the plant as possible. Tidy up any old leaves around the base of the plant.
Leaving spent flowers to long on the plant will deter more flowers and invite insects and fungus to the plant.
The flowers should last about a week.

I have 3 bird of paradise plants I just got. One was already blooming when I got it. My question is when it's done blooming, what do I do with the stalk? Do I cut it back or just let it be? They are all doing very good. I just want to know what to do with the dried out part of the bloom when it's dead. Do I cut the whole stalk back or just the top or leave it alone?
Cut the entire stalk unless there is another flower developing from the same stalk.

I have seeds from a Mexican Bird of Paradise. Do I need to do anything to them prior to planting (i.e. soak, score)?
It takes Bird of Paradise plants three to five years to mature from seeds, which are about the same size as a sweet pea seeds and have orange fuzz on the end. Hard seed shells dictate that they must be scratched before they will germinate. The easiest way to do this is to soak them in room temperature water overnight and nick the hard case with a knife or other instrument prior to planting. Do not allow the soil to become dry. Keep it moist, not wet. Cover the seed with a glass container, such as a jar, in order to create a humid environment. It will take Bird of Paradise seeds eight to twelve weeks to germinate. Does a bird of paradise plant need to be planted up to the trunk or leave the rhizome exposed? I received this plant from my son. It was hurting. I removed brown dried up leaves and scale. Now I need to learn what to do to make it thrive.
If planting outdoors in ground, it is best to keep it at the same depth as the height of the root ball (or same as the container its currently in).
