My birds of paradise are blooming like crazy but the flowers have brown spots on them and a brown sticky looking stuff looks like it is oozing out of the flower near where the stem is. The green leaves are not affected, just the flowers, with brown dots all over, especially the orange colored part. Thanks so much.
Sticky stuff can be a tip off to scale insects, which secrete sticky honeydew. If you can scrape the brown spots off with your fingernail, that would be scale (or possibly even aphids.) Here are some suggestions for dealing with that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/info/what-is-honeydew.htm
If you can't scrape off the spots, the most common disease that affects flowers in a fungal organism called botrytis blight. There is no cure. You should remove and destroy the flowers to prevent the fungus from spreading.
You can also take some samples of blooms to the county extension service for analysis.

Will bird of paradise roots damage a brick patio? How far from the bricks should the plants be planted? We just put down a brick patio and I would like to plant around it. I have always like bird of paradise plants. The area is in the full sun and very warm.
No, so many here in Las Vegas are put next to brick walls and buildings. It will be fine. Just make sure it has enough room around it to grow to its fullest. You should be fine! Beautiful plant too
What is the best type of Bird of paradise to begin with?
The orange bird of paradise is generally easiest to find and is the best candidate for someone just starting with these plants.
Thank you Heather.
I planted my bird of paradise 2 years ago and it bloomed once but it is still very small. It is planted outdoors in full sunlight. I water it about every other day and I have mulch around it.
The growth rate of a bird of paradise plant is classified as "slow" if it's any consolation.
Watering, good soil and a regular schedule of fertilizing is crucial to the growth of your plant.
Here is a great article about the care needed.
I have a bird of paradise plant. What feed would you use and how often? Also, what is happening when the leaves start to curl?
Here is a article that explains why leaves curl on a bird of paradise plant:

I would fertilize bird of paradise every couple of weeks during their active growth period with a general purpose water-soluble fertilizer.

My white bird of paradise was in a strong storm the other night and the main leaf shoot bent. Will it still produce its next leaf? I have braced it up with two other leaves in the meantime. Is this ok or do I need to cut it off?
I would trim away the damaged leaf, but be careful not to cut into the trunk.
The plant should recover and began to grow again.

How long must I wait for the first flower from my bird of paradise?
Basically, it all depends on the flower's growing conditions. The best way to encourage flowering is to be sure all of its growing conditions are met, which are discussed in the following articles:
