I have yard stickers. What is the best way to get rid of them that is pet friendly? I've had these stickers in my yard for a few years now. I have tried the mowing method by using the grass catcher and mowing 3 times a week. That doesn't seem to be working. I need something that is also pet/kid friendly.
Mowing often just throws the stickers, which are the seeds of the weed, all over the place. One fool-proof method of eradication is digging up the plants. Keep at it long enough, and they'll be gone. Here's an article that has more ideas: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/special/organic/homemade-pet-friendly-weed-killer.htm
I have just broke the ground with my tractor and have it ready to plant. Can I spray Roundup after I plant my seed to prevent new grass and weeds?
I would avoid the use of chemicals in the garden if possible, especially if this is going to be used for vegetables or other edibles. Instead, you should consider laying down landscape fabric or mulch to keep down weeds. Additionally, by using the Roundup, you may be killing your newly planted seeds as well.
If I remove all my plants and cover the area with black plastic for 6 months, will the weed bulbs and bulblets survive and regrow? I realize I will be smothering the soil and starving it but I do not want to use toxic poison like Round-up - will 6 months be long enough to kill the weed? Or should I leave the plastic for a year or more?
Most sources find 2 - 4 weeks under black plastic will kill the weeds. This article has more information on non-chemical methods of weed control: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/weeds/how-to-kill-grass-naturally-kill-unwanted-grass-in-your-yard.htm
However, this article has an interesting approach which recommends leaving the plastic etc. on for 6 months: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/projects/how-to-solarize-garden-beds-to-eliminate-garden-pests-in-the-soil.htm
As both my partner and I are disabled, and although we are not in wheelchairs, we are very limited as to what we are able to do. Hence, I could weep as to the state the garden is in. Most especially the weeds that grow through our block paving. We have tried various shop bought weed killers, and have even tried to use a blow torch. All to no avail. Can anyone tell us what we can do to rectify this problem?
Unfortunately, you may need to have someone come in to get the weeds under control and then possibly consider changing the garden to make it more accessible to the both of you for easier maintenance. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/special/accessible
Do I use Round-up weed killer before or after I till my garden? Have lots of ground cover growth. Thanks.
I would apply it before. Also keep in mind that you will need to let the soil sit for 1 week (2 if you can) to let the Roundup break down so that it does not kill any new plants you put in the soil.
How close to living plants can you spray grass killer and not cause them harm?
Well you don't want it to be close enough to touch the plants for sure. One way to alleviate this is to create a shield with cardboard that you can place in front of your plants to keep the grass/weed killer from getting onto them.
I have tried everything I can think of and struggle every year with these trees growing everywhere.
Your problem has two aspects: the tree seedlings, and the tree(s) that drops the seedlings. Can you eliminate the parent tree(s). If you can, this article talks about methods for killing trees: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/how-to-kill-a-tree-killing-trees-in-your-garden.htm
If you can't get rid of the parent, you are left with no choice but to contend every year with the seedlings. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/weed-trees.htm
