Q.I have a flower bed overrun by Onion Weed

Zone Johannesburg, South F | Lynn Chasan added on April 21, 2014 | Answered

If I remove all my plants and cover the area with black plastic for 6 months, will the weed bulbs and bulblets survive and regrow? I realize I will be smothering the soil and starving it but I do not want to use toxic poison like Round-up – will 6 months be long enough to kill the weed? Or should I leave the plastic for a year or more?

Most sources find 2 - 4 weeks under black plastic will kill the weeds. This article has more information on non-chemical methods of weed control: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/weeds/how-to-kill-grass-naturally-kill-unwanted-grass-in-your-yard.htm
However, this article has an interesting approach which recommends leaving the plastic etc. on for 6 months: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/projects/how-to-solarize-garden-beds-to-eliminate-garden-pests-in-the-soil.htm
