I bought climbing hydrangea 2007 or 2008 perfectly healthy large shiny green leaves never flowered what do I do? When we moved into this hse there was a beautiful orangy/red trumpet vine on fence quite mature . In 2016 less flowers , 2017 no flowers - what can I do?
This will be hydrangea macrophylla. This is the most difficult one to manage to keep flowering, as most areas get slightly too cold for the old growth to survive. This only flowers on old growth, so if no old growth makes it, then there will be no flowers. Now with the trumpet vine... It is likely a lack of fertilization. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/vines/trumpet-vine/growing-trumpet-vines.htm
Thank you for sending us your gardening question.
Do you cut trumpet vines and clematis back in the fall? We get a lot of snow and very cold. I just planted the trumpet vine, and the care instructions are rather sketchy on the tag. We've had the clematis for several years, and it does fine, but I have never cut it back. The only thing is that when it blooms it does so on brown, dried out looking vines, which makes me wonder if I should cut it back yearly so that the vines are new and green? Thanks.
Yes, you can cut the trumpet vine back after it has died off for the year. The clematis will be a little more tricky. You will have to prune it according to its type. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/vines/clematis/pruning-clematis-vines.htm

I live in Sacramento, CA. I planted 2, Campisis Radicans vines about 2 + months ago. I was advised not to plant in afternoon sun as the heat in this area is excessive at times. I planted where they receive about 6-7 hours of "morning sun". Last week, we experienced a period of intense heat with temps over 103 for 7 days in a row. Because of the excessive heat, I have been watering daily. This week, I have noticed several leaves turning black and curling. I also noticed a couple of leaves with pin holes so I am guessing that I have and infestation but I can't seem to locate the bug. Can you please advise me on what is causing the discolored leaves and what is eating the leaves? Thank you.
The yellowing leaves is an indication of the excess heat, most vines will rebound when temps cool.
