    It sounds like you have a pollination problem. This plant has male and female flowers and tends to produce male and female flowers at different times (to prevent self pollination - basically plant inbeeding). If the female flower is not pollinated, the immature fruit will just drop off before it grows.     Certainly, go ahead and cut off any leaves that are not looking good. Cut them down at the end of the leaf stem, where it emerges from the big stem of the plant.

    There is not a lot you can do for it if the section above it is healthy and growing leaves and roots. The only way to try to get new growth in that area would be to trim back the plant, and that is not worth it to sacrifice healthy growth above it.

    Cut the non-productive vine down to about 2" from the soil.
