Mine has lost all leaves and looks like a bunch of dead sticks in a pot.
Your plant may have received to much water.
Schefflera Plants can die quickly from overwatering.

I have a very large schefflera. The new growth is up at the ceiling. If I cut the stalk, will it bush back out from the bottom under where I cut it? There are no limbs there. The stalk is very tall.
There's a good chance you'll get multiple new shoots from the stalk where you cut it. Whenever I've pruned mine, it grows back twofold, thicker and very healthy. This article may help you learn how to properly prune a schefflera: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/schefflera/schefflera-plant-care.htm
When new shoots come out, they turn black and fall off.
You may be overwatering your plant. Schefflera plants should be allowed to dry out between waterings. If the soil is soggy the roots can die off from root rot.
Make sure the pot is draining excess water.
The link below will refresh you on the care requirements.

My dwarf schefflera is healthy except for mottled brown spots on a few leaves. I water it twice a month and it gets plenty of light (but not harsh direct sunlight). I'm attaching a photo. Any suggestions? Thanks!
This is most likely a fungal disease, Alternaria Leaf Spot.
It can start in the lower leaves of the plant and work it's way up.
Make sure you water according to the care information in the article below.
Keep the leaves dry and provide some air circulation around the plant.
Remove any diseased leaves or stems.
Schefflera are sensitive to chemical treatment of fungicides, so keeping the plant healthy and with correct care your plant should recover.

I have had this plant indoors for approximately 18 years, and since moving to a house without a high two-story foyer with over head windows 3 years ago, the plant has become sparse in the middle of the main trunk, and now I'm noticing the lower newer trunks have started to drop leaves and the trunk branch is darker in parts of the trunk. Is this root rot? If so, can I repot using the same container after a bleach washing? I live in zone 5a in Indiana. Should I wait to repot until spring, as long as I lighten up the watering amounts? I would like to propagate and start a new plant with this and didn't know if I should consider cutting the tallest stalk in the middle just above the leaves, removing the big bare middle from this tree. I hope the pictures will help make sense of what I'm asking. Thanks. Sincerely, Mary Clore

My schefflera seemingly has an abundance of sap - on leaves, on the clay pot and now on the parquet floor. Is this normal? Is there a solution?
This could be caused by an insect infestation. See these articles to check whether the symptoms fit:

Can my schefflera plants be saved? I was unable to bring them in and they froze. They were huge and beautiful. I am sick!
All you can do now is to sit and wait. You can get a sharp knife and cut a piece of stem from the plant to see if it is still green. If is green and not dry and too brittle, there is still some hope.
