I brought my purple fountain grasses inside the garage in fall, I watered them once a month. A few weeks ago I divided them to make more plants, the roots looked healthy but there is no new growth yet? What do I need to do? Help!!!
If you are in zone 9, you should be able to keep it in the ground over winter. But since it wintered in a garage, it needs gradual warming and more light to start growing again. Here is more in this article:
Could you tell me how big of a container a purple grass needs in order to spread? I live in zone 6
Is this purple fountain grass? The container needs to easily hold the rootball and add a few inches. You don't want to go too wide or the excess wet soil could cause root rot.
Is there a specific type of fertilizer that is suitable for these plants and, is it necessary to fertilize them. When the flowers (or plumes) turn brown during the summer or fall, is it necessary to remove them?
In your area, and since you are growing in container, your care routine will be a little different than typical. Since you will be dividing and repotting each Spring, it won't usually be necessary to use fertilizers. You will refresh the soil in Spring as it is being divided and planted back.
As far as pruning goes- Sure! You can do this before bringing them back in for the Winter.

Half of my purple fountain grass plants have not even bloomed at all this year. Others are sparse. There was a great deal of rain this spring, maybe too much. Do I remove the old dead areas of cut back fountain grass around shoots that are now blooming? Do I remove the dead ones and divide those that are blooming sparsely? Or simply replace them? Thank you!

Just moved into a new house and the purple fountain grass hasn’t been cut back apparently for some time and is overgrown. Should I wait until late winter? I’m afraid they will be really hard to prune if I wait until then.
It won't hurt to lightly prune it now, but wait till late winter to cut it to the ground.
