Is It Too Late In The Summer To Divide Purple Fountain Grass To Replant?

Half of my purple fountain grass plants have not even bloomed at all this year. Others are sparse. There was a great deal of rain this spring, maybe too much. Do I remove the old dead areas of cut back fountain grass around shoots that are now blooming? Do I remove the dead ones and divide those that are blooming sparsely? Or simply replace them?
