The area has morning and some afternoon sun. Anything that you can suggest would be great. I reside in Virginia, so I'd like something indigenous to the area. Thank you.
It's exciting, and overwhelming, to start a new garden. Before you make further plans, check out these basic questions: how many hours of direct sunlight does the area get; what does the soil seem like - clay, sand or in between; how many hours/week can you devote to tending plants; and how much money can you put toward the project. Doing your homework now will spare you the experience of putting a lovely plant in the wrong space, a garden area where it will not do well. I speak from experience! Here is a link that discusses how to get going and what to think about. It also allows you to search for plants native to your state. Native plants, along with a few "butterfly magnets" will provide food that butterflies know are safe to eat. If you have questions along the way, please send a new post. Good luck.

Hello, I am hoping you can suggest the name of the crawling plant that would be good for the mostly shaded area. We live in a warm climate in Hermossa Beach, California Thank you
You are in zone 10. This article will give you plants that suit zones 9, 10, and 11, even though it states that it is only for zone 9: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/gardening-by-zone/zone-9-10-11/zone-9-ground-covers.htm
My husband and I moved to Ramstein, Germany last year(military). We have 12 bats roosting along our house this summer and I’m trying to find very scented day/ night bloomers for them(to attract insects). Bats are endangered over here so I really want to provide an amazing habitat for the rest of summer and to return to next year. Germany has the same weather as Virginia during the winter but the colder months are a bit more prolonged/wet and summers are shorter/dry. I’d really love some input on plants to grow in ground or potted. Photo of the type of bat(pipistrelle) is living along my house. I absolutely love watching them dive and swoop in my yard.
You will want to ask around the local nurseries there. You can always check any online nursery but when you get from something local then you can be sure that it will survive in your area. The best way to learn about the vegetation in the area will be to ask others what they can and can't plant there.
Here is an website to give a few examples of what you may be looking for, though: https://www.hgtv.com/outdoors/flowers-and-plants/flowers/night-blooming-flowers-pictures

This is commonly called spiderwort. It likes part shade, particularly afternoon shade. I would plant it on the east or north side of your home. Here is more info: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/spiderwort/growing-spiderworts.htm
My neighbor had a plant growing in her flower bed last summer that had yellow daisy-like flowers that closed at night. She can't remember what it is.... she thought Coreopsis but I can't find anything about the closing flowers..... Help?
Members of the daisy family have flowers that close at night. You may be thinking of African daisies, gazania, and Osteospernum.
