When is best time to divide peonies. [Good info given on how. Thanks] Both some arborvitea and 3 large evergreen trees looking sorry> brown up front of arborvitae and the evergreen very large trees have some dead or sparse branches. We had the bottom dead branches removed last fall. Lots of fern and lilies of the valley and other plants under the trees. Any how-to's for reviving these evergreens?

I have had an itoh peony for about 4 years and it has yet to produce a bloom. It is a very healthy plant in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Can you suggest how I can get it to flower, please?
It very well could be excess nitrogen in the soil.
A soil test will help determine if this is the case.

I have a peony that, while comes into bud, never fully opens. The plant is approximately 4 years old (or more) and has been in the same location for that time period and the flowers have never fully opened. I have looked to see if there are any insects / bugs on the plant (other than ants) and have found nothing. I have looked at the soil conditions, although the two peonies on either side of this one, open fully. Do you have any ideas on what this might be. Thank you, Jane (E. Boekholt)
There could be a few reasons your Peony does not flower, this article will help you.

After the flowers are gone and the plant has what appears to be more buds on it which never bloom, do you cut these buds off to clean up the plant for the remainder of the summer?
Your Peony plant will bloom only 1 time each season. After the flowers fade, the petals will usually drop from the plant on their own. The spent flower center generally remains. This will not produce another flower.

My yard does not have good dirt. My small peony plant has pale leaves. It looks like it needs nutrients. What do I need to feed it with.
Peony plants need a sunny location with good organic and well draining soil.
You can start with a soil test and that will help you determine how to amend the soil for the best results.
Your County Extension an help you with a soil test.

Is it okay to cut back peonies after they have finished flowering/
It's best to let the plants die back naturally.

When is the best time to cut back my peonies? And how close to the ground?
Dead-head your peonies when blooms fade. I cut off several leaves to bring the stem in line with other leaves on the bush. Then leave the bush alone while it rebuilds the energy to produce blooms next year. In fall, the leaves turn a nice color; when that starts fading, cut them to the ground. Just make sure you mark the area so you know the exact location. (Learn from my mistakes.) Do not allow the leaves to remain over winter. Remove peony hoops and clean them. Peonies can get a virus that turns leaves black. Anytime you see this, remove the infected leaves/stems. Avoiding overhead watering is said to help prevent this problem.
