I followed all the directions to divide this plant. It was huge and about 6 years old and it was root bound. I thought I did it right, but it's been weeks and the plant divisions are still very droopy from where the leaves curve down off the stem. I decided to put them in just water. When I bought the plant it was in water with a beta fish. I have grown tropical plants in just water and they have been that way for over 10 years...what did I do wrong, and should I have more patience?
It appears the root structure is overwhelmed by the pot size.
This can cause overwatering and root rot.
I would suggest repotting with a good quality potting mix and a smaller pot size with drainage.

Can I take just the stem of the plant of a peace lily and start a root from the stalk part. No crown or root just from the stem? Say someone gave me a stem with the leave up top of the stem or stalk...can it take root like other plants and them begin to grow?
It can, but it may take awhile, and have to be constantly disinfected with peroxide. You can make a rooting hormone out of a few drops of honey, and a crushed aspirin tab in warm water. This will help it to root faster, while keeping it clean. Make sure to keep the soil slightly moist at all times. It should not be wet, or dry, but in between. In a dimly lit window would be the best place to put this for rooting. After it has, you can slowly increase the light exposure.
I have 2 adult lily plants, kept indoors in occassional sunlight (approx 1hr a day and not in high heat) with watering and fertilising as recommended from this site with no problems before.

are turning brown, but when I turned it out to see if it was pot bound, there are hardly any roots at all. This is my third one. Just don't know what I am doing wrong; have tried your advice and watered with bottle water but only recently. Please help

The sap is dripping onto the surrounding floor.
The dripping is likely to be "honeydew" excretions from a sucking insect pest, probably aphids.
Inspect the leaves and especially the under sides. You can wipe the pests off with a rag or wet sponge to minimize the infestation and nuisance.
You can use neem oil to treat the plant.
