How late can I plant for green onions?
I'd give them a good 60 days before first frost. The ones we planted too late to eat last season, were ready for us to eat the beginning of this season. When we empty half a container (we have cement for a yard, so we can only garden with containers), we add more seeds up to about Spetember. But, we live in Zone 6b, so our first frost is around Halloween.
My red onion plants all have one stalk that is longer and wider than the rest. Is this a good thing?
It should not cause any harm. Check to make sure it is not a flower stem (it will be developing a bulb on the end). If it is, it is best to remove it.
For the last two years, my sweet onions (planted from starts) have not grown nearly as large as the first year I started growing them. The first year I planted them in standard rows at 4-6 inches apart, and they were nice and large way before they started to dry and fall over. The last 2 years, however, I have planted them at 4 inches in a square foot garden setting, and it seems they start falling over long before they have grown full sized, except for some. We have had some windy, stormy times and a lot of 90 degree heat. I can't figure it out.

I'd like to raise a garden but have had some trouble getting the onions to grow big. My wife has a number of friends that have old her that you should stomp them back into the soil when the tops begin to show above the ground. Sounds nuts to me. Have you ever heard of this, and would it work? I feel it would destroy a living plant. How about it?

I planted onion plants too late (April in SC) and managed to get onions that are between . 25 and 1. 0 in in diameter. Can I use these as sets to be planted in October?
If you have lots of room and don't depend on them as your onions, I would try it. Not knowing what kind of onions they are hinders a more solid answer.
