Growing Bigger Onions

Question

I’d like to raise a garden but have had some trouble getting the onions to grow big. My wife has a number of friends that have old her that you should stomp them back into the soil when the tops begin to show above the ground. Sounds nuts to me. Have you ever heard of this, and would it work? I feel it would destroy a living plant. How about it?
