My soil in my cold frame greenhouse is resting until this fall when the weather cools down. Meanwhile, I have noticed giant mushrooms growing in my CF greenhouse. I want to grow lettuce this fall/winter, but I am worried about what the mushrooms are doing to my soil.
Mushroom growth is usually due to an abundance of moisture. Perhaps this article will be helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/hpgen/getting-rid-of-mushrooms-growing-in-houseplant-soil.htm
I am ready to harvest my green leaf lettuce, but would like to replant so I have it through the fall. When/how often do I replant? How late in the year can I plant it? How closely can I plant it to the lettuce already grown? (I have a 4 ft x 6 ft box garden, so not a ton of room. ) Also, when I cut my lettuce, will it grow back from that same plant this year? Or do I just leave it alone after I cut it, and rely on the new heads I've planted?
Leaf picking will prolong the life of the plant instead of cutting as a head.
As far as I know, all lettuce prefer cooler temps, so, keep this in mind.
I plant in waves in the spring. 2-3 weeks apart then again in the fall.
I have 8 red leaf lettuce plants that have bolted and are now flowering. How many should I keep to save the seeds for next year? We are 4 people gleaning and harvesting from this garden.
If you allow the plant to flower, it will produce seeds, which you can harvest and save for next season. How many you wish to keep for seed collecting is up to you, but since you have that many plants, I would use half for seeds. Can I grow lettuce in a pot?
Yes, you can. It is recommended though that if you grow lettuce in pots, you grow it as leaf lettuce instead of head lettuce as it will be easier for you. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/lettuce/harvesting-leaf-lettuce.htm
I have a timber raised garden frame in full sun (3 meters/1. 5 meters/400 mils. deep). What can I fill it with allowing for drainage to grow lettuce, silver beet, etc. ? Thank you.
Charlie
If you mean it is an elevated bed (self contained) then it is typical to place a layer of rocks or pebbles at the base then cover this with compost or a soilless mix. I have even seen people use used coffee grounds as a growing medium.
If you mean a raised bed placed on the ground, the ground will serve as drainage and you can fill with compost or good quality top soil.
I have noticed that there are a few yellow leaves from my lettuce. I am not sure if I should cut them with scissors, rip them off or just leave them. Can someone please advise what I should do?
Thank you.
You can cut the yellowing leaves from the lettuce. Do not rip them.
I am a novice at growing veggies. I planted leaf lettuce last spring and nothing really sprouted. This year, I have a few plants. Two of the plants are almost 4 ft tall. When do I harvest? How do know when the leaf is mature to harvest and enjoy? Are the plants supposed to grow that tall?
