I have a few branches of a Hydrangea that stick out and are in the way. Is this an OK time of year to trim a few off and how close to the main stem should it be done? Thanks Sharon Schwieters
You don't say what kind of hydrangea you have, whether it blooms on old wood or new wood, so if it blooms on old wood, it is probably already producing buds for next year. You may be able to see them and can cut up to the new buds. If it blooms on new wood, go ahead and trim as far back as you need to.
I would like to kill my hydrangea in order to make way for another shrub
You will need to dig it out, and douse the area with boiling water a few times a day for 2 or 3 days. This will completely kill off any remaining roots, or offshoots that may try to spring up.
This article will offer information on herbicides, should you choose this route: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/weeds/using-herbicide-in-gardens.htm
What should I do ? Leave them green or cut them off? Many thanks!
I would go ahead and deadhead the bloom. Here are instructions:

That is a common question and it depends on the type. Here is the rundown:

I have this white stuff growing on my hydrangeas. Is there a way of getting rid of it please?
It looks like hydrangea soft cottony scale. If possible, cut out the affected stems or if the infestation is severe, use horticultural oils.

These plants are 2-4 years old.
That is a common complaint about hydrangeas. If you buy any new ones, get one that grows on new wood like the pannicle varieties, so winter weather or pruning won't affect it.
Usually if hydrangeas don't bloom, it's because the buds were cut off during pruning or because of winter kill. Here is more information:

How and when do I prune my Hydrangeas -- what do I do when it is fall and there are still flowers? Some are dead some still alive on the bushes? Thank you
You can trim off the dead hydrangea heads but be careful not to cut too far back on the stem if your hydrangea blooms on old wood (previous season's growth) as many of the mopheads do. If you look closely, you can see the buds forming. Only trim up to the buds.
