I do not like the look of the shoots on the hosta plant. I want to cut them off as soon as I see them. Will this slowly kill the plant?
No, cutting the flower stalks from the plant will not cause any harm.
Now that the flowers have bloomed and fallen off, can the unsightly stems (stalks) be removed? How soon and where should you cut, at the leaf top or down inside the leaf crown?
I would recommend cutting the flower stalks off near the base so the foliage can disguise the cut end of the stalk.

Happy gardening!
I live in Newcastle upon Tyne and have bought 3 hostas which I potted on into larger pots. I wish to plant them in the garden on the August bank holiday weekend. Is this ok to do this then?
Yes, you can plant them out but take care to ensure to water regularly for the first couple of weeks.
Mulching can help with moisture retention.

I acquired an old hosta in my garden and have tried to divide it this year, as it was old and starting to dry out, and I didn't get many leaves appearing. When I divided it, there were lots of long white tubers around the roots, like potatoes appear around roots. I would like to know if these are from the hosta, and will they produce more hostas, or is it something else that has grown there? Attached are some pictures. I am in Yorkshire in the UK. Thank you. Andrea
I spoke with a gardener friend of mine who grows many hosta.
The fact that the plant is old and may have had little care over the years may be the reason the roots seem to be malformed.
She has seen similar misshaped roots over the years.
Discard the old and damaged roots and replant any parts of the plant that seem viable.

Can I cut off dead flowers on plants after they are done flowering or do I have to wait till in the fall when I clean out the bed?? These are plants that are not like a marigold or petunia where you constantly pick off the dead flowers so that they will keep blooming. These plants flower, then are done for the season, such as hostas.
Yes, you can deadhead your flowers as the flowers fade anytime throughout the growing season. Many plants actually benefit from this.
Is there any downside to cutting off the stems once the plant has bloomed and the stems are dry?
No, you can trim away the spent flowers and the flower stems at any time.

We are moving from Missouri to Virginia. I have hostas and elephant ears (lots). Can I dig them up and store them till spring and can you tell me how, please? I hate to leave behind 5 years of work. We are moving in 2 weeks and we'll be in a place for a month I won't be able to plant anything. Thank you so much, it would really help me to get your advice. Debbie
Your Hosta can be planted into pots and moved.
