Question

Now that the flowers have bloomed and fallen off, can the unsightly stems (stalks) be removed? How soon and where should you cut, at the leaf top or down inside the leaf crown?

I would recommend cutting the flower stalks off near the base so the foliage can disguise the cut end of the stalk.
