Hi there, This is my first year growing garlic, in Southwest Ontario. It came up great and has been thriving. However, the last couple of days, I've noticed something weird with the scapes that are coming up. They almost look like they're being eaten or borrowed into. Today, I had a closer look and broke one off and can see a little worm like thing in it. I've attached a couple of pictures - I also dug up a couple of bulbs and the bulb portion seems to be okay. Thanks for any help you can provide!!!
That is strange as garlic generally is used as a companion plant to deter borers because most borers do not like garlic. I would remove and dispose of any damaged plants
Your warm climate garlic planting guide says plant 8-10" deep? Is that correct? All other guides say half that?????
Yes, this is correct information. The idea is too plant the bulbs deep to keep them from growing and maturing too quickly.
I allowed half of my garlic to bloom as an experiment to see if taking the scapes off really affected the size of the bulb. I am surprised to find that my scapes didnt actually bloom but as forming what appears to be a ball full of garlic cloves. They are larger than a pea... about the size of a small marble. I cant seem to find a photo of what it looks like online. Can these little cloves be harvested? Eaten? Replanted? I would love to know how best to use this new-to-me part of the garlic plant.
