on the ground around the trunk, if you will be placing leaves and or straw around the tree and burlap. This will stop mice from eating the bark off the tree in the winter as the mice will live inside the burlap in the bed of leaves and straw.
Thank you! That is useful information that will save others some trouble. :)
Some lower branches are dead and I want to remove them.
It will not hurt at all to remove dead branches at any time. You will be safe to do so. This article will help you with the care of Fig trees:

Here are some articles that will help you with your issue:
These fig trees they don't produce as they should . This is the fifth year but they grow very little and produce a small amount of fruits. I live in the zone 7 close to Washington D.C. What do I need to do to have a good producing trees. The soil type is clay I used 10-30-10 fertilizer called Bloom Booster. I was advised to use Dr. Earth Natural Wonder Organic fertilizer for fruit trees. Another advice is to use fertilizer 10-10-10 ? what is the correct way to get lots of fruits.
This is likely not due to fertilization but where you are located. MOST figs are not hardy enough to fruit in your area.
A general fruit tree fertilizer should be plenty and unnecessary anyway. Usually overfertilization is one of the most common causes of no fruit production.
I am in SW Florida, fig tree is believed to have originated in Sicily, makes large figs white inside, I was given a shot from the bottom of a large tree near Orlando, Florida , I am in SW Florida, tree is healthy is now at least 5 years old, over 6ft tall makes fair amount of figs ,when mine get about an inch in diameter, they turn yellow and fall off! any clues as to why and what can I do ? thanks Sal
If this is one of the older figs, then it is likely that there is no tree around for pollination. If there is another fig tree that has pollen, then it is possible that the wasps responsible for pollination are not around.
Unfortunately, you may need another tree to obtain fruit.
Many, these days, are self fertile.

Can anyone advise on what the problem is with my fig tree and how I can help it recover? It was transferred from it's pot in March. I fertilized it and added a few of the fruit tree spikes at the waterline, as recommended. It seemed to be doing fine till about 2 weeks ago. I first noticed dark spots appearing so I applied an organic pesticide. Another week later the leaves have started turning yellow rather quickly. I'm in central FL and it's getting pretty hot now so I keep it watered daily. This tree has a sentimental value so I really hate to lose it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
P.S. The pesticide was an organic spray (Neem Oil).
Hi Carol, Pesticide was applied early morning. I typically water at 5 am (irrigation system). Occasionally I'll water in the early evening when it's not so hot. Today it's been raining off and on all day. Hope it's not over watering but the soil does dry out between waterings. I'm really concerned about the spots on the leaves.
May i ask what time of day you water and applied the pesticide (a liquid pesticide?)
