Is it best to add nitrogen to a garden in the spring or in the fall so it can overwinter?
Fertilizing rate and timing is specific to the plant involved. Some plants, like cosmos, respond to nitrogen with abundant leafy growth and few flowers. Roses and other heavy feeders require several applications of fertilizer each season for top performance. But, in general, nitrogen is applied at the product's recommended rate in spring as growth begins. A second application, at roughly half the rate, is sometimes applied in late summer. Later use of nitrogen isn't recommended since it tells the plant to produce new growth when it should be storing sugars for winter and hardening off growth from earlier. Nitrogen doesn't prepare the plant for winter. The leaves make sugars which are stored in the roots for over-wintering and leaf development next spring. To minimize winter damage, the plant needs to be well hydrated all fall, even after leaf drop.
When you add used coffee grounds to your garden, should they be dry or can they be wet? I've been saving my grounds in a plastic container on a kitchen counter and at the end of a week or two - or when the container is full, I add them to my azaleas, rhoddies, roses and vegetables, but I got to thinking maybe I'm doing it wrong and the grounds should be dried out first. I call myself looking for an answer and there is probably a logical one, but I can't seem to find an answer. I would appreciate. very much, your response. Thank-you, Peggi Thompson, Renton WA
Coffee grounds can be added whenever you want to. They are a good source of nitrogen, and very light on the plants' roots. I would recommend adding them frequently if they are wet, as they could mold rather quickly. Can you tell me where I can find some good kelp fertilizer near me in Mundelein, IL?
Your local Co-op, or other large stores should carry it. If not, then online is the is a good place to shop. There are two types of kelp that we work with most often... One of them I prefer over the other. Ascophyllum nodosum is the more effective of the two, however most extracts will come in the form of both that and laminaria digitata.
What plants benefit from coffee?
All plants can benefit from coffee grounds in some way. It does provide some nitrogen for growth as it breaks down.
if rain means another coat of diatomaceous earth, then you have to reapply after watering every day, right?
This depends on the results you are trying to achieve. If this is for insect control then yes. But there are other methods that I like, and they don't require daily application. If it is fr something else, then it may not be necessary to reapply.
Where can beneficial nematodes be bought? I have tried Lowes, farm stores and the local hardware stores. I want to use them for grub worms. I also have a small dog to consider. Thank you
You will have the best luck finding these online. We can't recommend specific retailers, but if you search for "beneficial nematodes" you will find companies that will ship nematodes live or in egg form and packaged in an inert material.
Should I fertilize both my flowering shrubs and non-flowering shrubs at the same time this fall?
I always recommend fertilizing in spring, as most of that will have been wasted by springtime. Bushes will tend to grow much less in winter.
