Questions About Fertilizer

Fertilizing rate and timing is specific to the plant involved. Some plants, like cosmos, respond to nitrogen with abundant leafy growth and few flowers. Roses and other heavy feeders require several applications of fertilizer each season for top performance. But, in general, nitrogen is applied at the product's recommended rate in spring as growth begins. A second application, at roughly half the rate, is sometimes applied in late summer. Later use of nitrogen isn't recommended since it tells the plant to produce new growth when it should be storing sugars for winter and hardening off growth from earlier. Nitrogen doesn't prepare the plant for winter. The leaves make sugars which are stored in the roots for over-wintering and leaf development next spring. To minimize winter damage, the plant needs to be well hydrated all fall, even after leaf drop.

Coffee grounds can be added whenever you want to. They are a good source of nitrogen, and very light on the plants' roots. I would recommend adding them frequently if they are wet, as they could mold rather quickly. Here is an article that will help:https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/composting/ingredients/coffee-grounds-gardening.htm

Your local Co-op, or other large stores should carry it. If not, then online is the is a good place to shop. There are two types of kelp that we work with most often... One of them I prefer over the other. Ascophyllum nodosum is the more effective of the two, however most extracts will come in the form of both that and laminaria digitata.

This depends on the results you are trying to achieve. If this is for insect control then yes. But there are other methods that I like, and they don't require daily application. If it is fr something else, then it may not be necessary to reapply.

You will have the best luck finding these online. We can't recommend specific retailers, but if you search for "beneficial nematodes" you will find companies that will ship nematodes live or in egg form and packaged in an inert material.

I always recommend fertilizing in spring, as most of that will have been wasted by springtime. Bushes will tend to grow much less in winter.
