If I were to slightly cut branches on crepe myrtle tree to even them out, would it make the tree stay short or would it still get taller? I cannot seem to find any information that tells me anything except thinning out, but nothing on getting the tree to grow tall. Am I supposed to trim the branches shorter each dormant season? I have one or two branches that are a lot taller than the rest. Thank you. I am in zone 8, Morgan City, Louisiana.
Each variety of crepe myrtle has it's own average height. (Kind of like each person will attain their own personal height. Once grown, you can't make a person or plant grow more.) How can I get rid of straw-like grass or straw on my crape myrtle trees?
Please expand your question. I'm not sure what you mean by "straw like grass on my"...crepe myrtle.
Is it a fungus? If a fungus, what do I need to do to get rid of it?
Crepe myrtles have exfoliating bark. I've never heard on one exfoliating to leave a bright yellow trunk. You might consider taking a sample to your local agricultural extension office for diagnosis and recommendations. I have a tree that is about 7 years old. The trunk doesn't seem to get very strong. It's about 6" in diameter, which is not big enough to support the tree without being staked. I lost one that broke off at ground level that was also staked. How can I get this trunk grow thicker? Thanks for your help.
The trunk will grow thinker with time. Is the plant in full sun? Some trees and shrubs are more brittle than others, Bradford pear is a prime example, but I haven't experienced limb loss with crepe myrtles. Have yyou had a storm with severe winds before or at the time of broken limb?
I pruned my 7 year old Crepe Myrtle late spring this year (in Central Florida). It it usually has good growth by this time, no blooms as it is a late bloomer. But this year it isn't sprouting normal shoots but small tight patches of growth, almost like lichen, the only shoots are at the bottom. Did I kill it when I pruned it?
If the tree is putting up new shoots from the ground, it isn't dead., I don't know what the weird growth would be. If that continues, you may need to remove the limbs on which it is located. I would suggest taking a sample to your local agricultural extension office for identification and recommendations.
The leaves have brown bumps all over, then they all fall off.
I would cut it down a lot & then graft another tree onto those stumps.
A large limb from my crepe myrtle is hanging over my front steps. It leads directly to the trunk. Can it be trimmed in August?
This link takes you to a page of articles on crepe myrtles, the first three are about pruning: http://www.google.com/cse?cx=012078378210706707791%3Af1h5n_k1r5e&ie=UTF-8&q=pruning+crepe+myrtle+trees&oq=&gs_l=#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=pruning%20crepe%20myrtle%20trees&gsc.page=1
