I have an established Crepe Myrtle tree that looks poorly. The tree was lightly pruned in early winter after the leaves had fallen and by the end of Spring had not changed. It is now mid-summer and the branches have grown odd buds but they have not sprouted leaves. My local nursery had not seen this before and thinks it could be a virus. Can you recommend a treatment? Thanks.
The "odd growth" of new foliage reminds of witches broom on hydrangeas. It is caused by direct or nearby applications of chemicals or by aster's yellow virus in hydrangeas. But, I am in Texas so I will let someone else chime in. CMs here are typically very hardy and drought tolerant in our similar summers but I have not seen it in my 40 year-old CMs so far. I will ask around and post again if I find something.
I live in zone 9b, Santa Rosa CA. My crape Myrtle tree looks terrible, bare small branches, yellow leaves curling. Our growing Maple Tree is taking away a lot of the sun it used to get. It still flowers beautifully late Summer, but the foliage is clearly trying to tell me something. How can I help my tree?
The fuzzy growths look like lichen, which is harmless, however it often appears on declining trees. If you aren't fertilizing the tree, try that using a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. The decreasing light could be adding to the tree's problems. The yellow spots on the leaves could be from aphid feeding. Check the undersides of leaves for tiny, oval pests. Cut out any dead branches to the ground.
Here is more information that should help:

The crepe myrtles in my backyard have always been great. This year one is beautiful the other o blooms nothing. My wife has wild Iris tubers planted around the treee I don’t know if that factored into this. Something is definitely wrong . The other crepe Myrtle is a bush and it’s in year 6 ihave gotten some flowers in the past but not very many and none this year. The bush has never gotten wider only taller and this the bush looks great but no flowers. Please Help these are my favorite to sit on my patio watch the birds in them. I have them professionally fertilized through year. At 70 years old they bring me enjoyment .
The wild iris may be competing with the crape myrtles for nutrition and water. It's always best to put mulch under trees, not more plants. These articles should help determine why they are not blooming:
