My bird of paradise bloomed last year, right after I got it from the nursery. Will it bloom again this year. ? It has grown, put on leaves and seems happy. It gets about 4 hours of sun each day. It is in its original pot, and I fertilize it lightly, every two weeks. Thanks. Bonnie Crim. Bonniecrim336@yahoo.com

Read the article on how to get bird of paradise to bloom and mine is rather pot bound, in a southern exposure window and was repotted this last spring. It is not blooming but is pushing up the dirt. I want to repot and give it more room but the article recommended not to. Should I just skim off the pushed up dirt and leave it go? I would love to see this bloom. I raised this from a seed! Seeded in 2010. It also had an ant infestation when I tried to set it outdoors last year but I have defeated the ants. Any further advice?
Hello,
Thank you for sending us your gardening question. Container grown plants will bloom more profusely if kept slightly pot bound. Repotting too often can inhibit the flowering of bird of paradise blooms for up to two years. Instead, you should simply topdress the plant with fresh potting soil in spring.

My bird of paradise plant is blooming. It's beautiful! I live in MD. At what temperature should I bring the plant inside? Thank you.
That is rare, and wonderful! I would bring it in when the temperatures reach 50 degrees... Here is a link that will help:https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/bop/bird-of-paradise-an-exotic-flower-like-none-other.htm
I've had my indoor bird of paradise for six months and in the last couple weeks small brown spots have started to appear on its leaves. The spots are in line across the leaves or near the base of a leaf. Any advice on what could be causing this? Thanks
This looks like a fungal infection setting in. It is best to let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. Usually, over-watering is the usual culprit here.
Put wettable sulfur into the soil, and this will help kill off the infection. Also, you may want to make sure that it get bright but not direct light.

I have a bird of paradise I have grown in my house for 19 yrs. It is about 3 stories high in a walkout Lower level. It has reached the top of the ceiling and I would like to know how to or even if I can trim the top of it. I have let the lower leaves grow back this time and have not trimmed them yet. Also is it possible to remove lower parts to establish new plants?
Yes, you can prune a bird of paradise by removing the tallest leaves back to where they attach to the stem. Or, you can remove the entire main "trunk" and allow the leaves at the base to grow.

You can also divide portions at the base to produce new plants, as described in this article:

Go ahead and repot; this could be a time to move up one pot size! Use a good quality potting soil.
