My butternut squash is growing out of control has a few yellow flowers on it but then shrivel up I have lots of new green flowers coming through. It is in my greenhouse it is bearing no fruit. Can I cut it back and how do I do this. Mrs C Hughes.
You will likely need to pollinate the female flowers with male flower pollen, by hand. This can be done with a small, soft paint brush.
Pruning isn't necessary, and should be avoided, as it can lead to infection, fairly quickly.

in northern Mn. People say I should thin out the blossoms to produce more squash that mature to harvest. When do you thin out the blossoms? Thin male and female? How many do you thin, what %, I've a lot of people recommend thinning blossoms, but none have answers to above questions.
There are more male than female blossoms so if you're going to thin, pick the males. They can be dipped in batter and fried, too! That is the only reference I see to removing blossoms.

I am trying to grow butternut squash , each little butternut squash that appears it dies what am I doing wrong
It wouldn't hurt to get your soil tested. There may be some mineral deficiencies that are causing the trouble. Fertilizing is important, too.
Here are some articles on our website that describe the growing process:

five green small leaves, no flowers. I want to plant it where it would get direct sun at least 8 hours a day.
Transplanting at this point will likely kill it or set it back even further than it already has been. I would suggest leaving it and planting in the correct location next year. If you have more than one, I would try moving a few of them and leaving some.

My butternut squash needs some pruning. They have grown large with lots of foliage. I mean a lot. Need help Thanks Steve
According to the article below, it is more harmful to prune than not to prune:

I want to determine when to trim vine tips to encourage ripening of developing squash but don't know how long it takes a newly formed butternut to ripen. What is the time frame. Seed packets only contain information re: planting to harvest but the squash pop up at different times.
Gardeners in cooler zones may trim the tips of the vines after fruit has set to encourage ripening. In warmer zones, letting the vines grow long yields more fruit. Here is more about when to pick the fruit:

Hi there... Can you please tell me if a butternut is ready that's a rich creamy color but not exceptionally tan? I'm worried about it splitting from being on the vine too long. This one was the first to grow and is quite wide, I'd say maybe 5 inches and about 9 inches long. Thanks in advance for any advice you have.
