we have planted giant bird of paradise next to our concrete pool, but ive read the roots are strong and could crack the concrete wall of the pool?? is this correct? should we dig them out, as they are getting quite established now.
many thanks
Rika
Roots go out and yes they can damage concrete.
It would be best to remove before damage occurs.

Is it OK to prune the frost damaged leaves of my plants --- they are at least 7-8 feet tall, most of the leaves have been hit by frost and are brown and ragged....the trunks of the plants look fine with no damage to them....should I fertilize them his spring??
Do not trim these until there is no more threat of frost. Make sure that you see signs of new growth before you cut off the old growth. This will ensure that the plant survives.
i have provided with a lot of sun and tried both watering it more and watering it less but the leaves at the top keep curing and browning with some yellow dry spots on them as well
Bird of Paradise are very intolerant of both: too dry or too wet.

What are the onion shaped bulb growths at the roots of my four year old bird of paradise plants? My plants flowered last spring for the first time, they were beautiful.
Can you send a picture? It sounds like new offshoots, but a picture would help me to be sure.
On 1/16/18 I copied your blog. Later I realized that page 4 was missing. On today, I tried to find the same blog as listed on the bottom of the blog page. However, the responding text noted that it was not available. I want to purchase a bird of paradise plant as a houseplant. So your complete blog would be very helpful. Thank you for your help

Plant has been cut back extremely short what should I do to protect and feed this winter?
This should never be done, as it will likely kill the plant. Unfortunately, if there is no foliage, or the apical growth tip has been cut, then it will not recover.
I read your article on CA Bird of Paradise and how you usually just split it or plant seeds. Have you tried leaf propagation and if you did, how did it go? Thx in advance for your help. Carter Thoenes
I'm no aware of leaf cutting propagation for Bird Of Paradise and did not find any information on this as a propagation method in my research.
Many gardeners love to experiment so if you have the time; no harm!
