Hi I have had this Azalea in the ground for years but I didn't amend the soil cause I didn't know.Im only giving it fertilizer.Should I dig it up?What should I do?
If the shrub is performing well, merely add an inch of compost annually to the soil underneath the shrub when you fertilize in spring. It looks like a healthy beauty to me.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO PLANT AZELIA BUSH IN ST LOUIS, MO
This is risky, as you are zone 6. This is outside of the survival zone of most azaleas. You should plant them after all danger of frost has passed. It will need a few weeks to establish so make sure there is not frost in the forecast.
Most likely, this will not survive the winter in your area. If you know someone with one that survives nearby, it would be best to ask about what variety it is. Some can survive outside of their native range, but you would have to select for local cold hardy varieties.
I have saved several days of coffee grounds, but they are molding on the surface already.....can I still put them out on the soil around my azaleas?
I'm sorry to inform you that the acid in coffee leaches into the water when it is brewed. Your coffee grounds are a great addition to your compost heap. Try an organic soil acidifier/fertilizer like Hollytone.
I have azalea bushes plant on the outside of my house that are spaced too far apart but instead of adding more azalea bushes in between them, what other plants that I can use to fill the spaces in but also are there plants I can use that will add some color and make my outside look more appealing?
Heather is a very common companion with these. This article will give you more information on their care: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/heather/growing-heather.htm
Can I plant any low height ground cover or flowers under azalea bushes not harming them? If I can, which plants are the best for a half sun/shade area?
Perennial bulbs such as daffodils, hellebores and snowdrops would be nice.
You could also plant Hosta and ferns.
I pruned my azaleas last spring after they bloomed. This year the plants have extremely long bare stems that grow in clusters off the main stem. Picture is attached. Now I am unsure how to prune those or why it happened. Hoping for some advice.
This just happens sometimes, when lower growth gets shaded. You can prune these off, as they will remain unsightly. This article will give you more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/azalea/pruning-azaleas.htm
My azaleas didn't put on any leaves or blooms this year. Is there anything that I can do to help them? They look almost dead. I've had them for about 18 years. They have always been so pretty. Please help. Thanks for any help Jan Smith
