What is the best weed control agent for a large asparagus bed? Would Preen be effective? We've read pros and cons of using salt-should you or shouldn't you? Thank you in advance
The best way to get rid of weeds and not harm your Asparagus is to pull the weeds by hand.
I had to do the task myself over two days last week!

Asparagus plants arrived and the ground will not be ready for at least 3 weeks!!
Store your plants in a cool, dark place and they should be fine. If the plants look like they're drying out, sprinkle with a little water. Keep in mind that a bit on the dry side is better than too wet, as excess moisture may cause rot.
About nine months ago I was given some Asparagus plants which I potted into 150mm pots and they have grown very well despite the awful heat wave. They have outgrown the pots and I have to transplant them into above ground old chemical containers that are 100mm x 900mm x 600mm deep. The weather is still warm here at St.George Qld but I am concerned that it might be the wrong time to make that move. Should I wait until they brown off and are prepared for the winter top-dresssing to transplant or should I wait for early Spring to transplant? I have had no experience with Asparagus and I do not want to lose these wonderful plants. Thank you for your help. Keith.
It would be best to transplant during dormancy.

How can I keep my asparagus from creeping out of its bed? My asparagus bed is 4 ft. wide and 16 ft. long, bordered by 2 x 6 lumber. It is well established, started about 30 years ago. The last couple of years, the spears are coming up under the wood border and growing on the outside, only on one edge (the north) and not the other (south). I dug up the plants that were trying to escape and hope to put them back in the center, though I may wait until the harvest is done. Should I use an edging of some type that will prevent the plants from outgrowing their space?
What a wonderful sounding bed of Asparagus.
Since it is so well established, it likely is spreading out to gain more room.
You may want to lift some of the crowns and either divide and replant or even share with another gardener.
You can cut the seeds from the plants to eliminate reseeding.

I planted crowns in early spring, and saw a few shoots--but not shoots from all the crowns I planted. Even though I new better, I got impatient and covered the new shoots over with about 6 inches of clay-ish dirt. The shoots haven't made it to the top of the new soil line, and it's been at least two weeks. Is it possible that I'll still see shoots? How long would you recommend waiting before digging up the crowns and doing it right this time?
Heavy clay soil can kill our the plants.

Should I cut it back or let it keep growing. It is about 4 ft tall and has little seeds

Hi We have just taken over an allotment which has asparagus which we would like to move to another place on the allotment. This year we were to late to have an harvest because it has bolted. What should we do between now that late September, when we plan to move them. Thanks Steve
Let them flower and seed. You can actually plant the seeds next year or throw them out. They are very toxic so be careful. Don't trim them back til you move them. This will make a better harvest the next year. I don't know if they are in pots or a garden bed but if your digging them up you have to dig a very wide deep hole since the roots spread out flat and deep. Resow the roots on a mound and drape them over it.
