Tips on cutting a dying bloom of a bird of paradise?
Cut the entire stalk unless there is another flower developing from the same stalk. If so, just cut the spent flower by itself...at the 'spathe', where the flowers emerge from the stem. (The hard beak-like bract/spathe sits horizontally. The spathe normally holds 4 to 16 flowers, each flower composing of 3 orange sepals and 3 blue petals).
The ends of the stems of our Mexican Bird of Paradise plant are turning brown this year and it is not producing vibrant colored flowers as it has in past years. We did have a very hard freeze this past winter and we cut the plant down after that freeze as we do every year. The plant is in the direct Phoenix sun but has always produced wonderful flowering colors, until this year. What can cause the brown tips and what should we do to cure it?
You many want to increase watering to help reduce the stress.
While it is blooming a regular fertilizer can be applied.
When dormant cut the plant back by 1/3.

Grew from seed 4 bird of paradise plants this year (April). One is now about to flower and they are outside. I read it takes years for it to flower. Why is it flowering so soon? I germinated seeds in damp kitchen paper, took 5 days on window sill. Transplanted into a small pot, then at 6 inches tall I put in this pot plant food. When it was a foot tall, I put it outside on patio and let it look after itself, occasionally watering and fertilizing it. It is now around 3 foot tall and has several side shoots. I have not given it any special treatment. I am not a gardener. I read these are difficult to grow and flower, beginner's luck?.
You are correct in that though growing from seed is not necessarily difficult, waiting for growth and flowers takes patience--usually!
How wonderful that you have had such success and really must have provided the optimum growing conditions.
Enjoy the results of you work and thank you for sharing this success story. The beauty of gardening, it keeps us on our toes and with all the research sometimes you just can't explain what the reasons are.

Can a broken branch of Mexican bird of paradise be replanted to grow?
We have a new Red Bird of Paradise plant. Planted 2 weeks go. It now has clear watery looking globules on the stems just below the blooms. Do you know what they might be and how to eliminate them if they aren't good for the plant?
There may be pests on the plant. They can make the leaves "drip." The water is actually honeydew from these pests. Neem oil is an effective treatment.
