My Wisteria has been on a south-facing fence for about 6 yrs and has always bloomed. However, this year the blooms have not fully opened and some appear to have died on the plant. I prune following advice. Any advice? Graham D
I would guess that the nitrogen to phosphorus ratio is off. The soil may have an abundance of nitrogen, which would result in nice, healthy green growth but little to no blooms. Without the right amount of phosphorus, it will not bloom well. Bone meal is a great way to add phosphorus. I lived in Atlanta for many years and was always loved the Wisteria in the springtime. I would like to add some to my garden in the Chicago area. How would wisteria do in this climate or are there certain hardy types that could survive in this climate?
Many people have been successful with growing this hardy vine in northern climates. Wisteria typically does not need any special treatment for winter. It is able to withstand temps of up to -30 F to -40 F. I want to promote more vine growth in my wisteria and wonder if removing the seed pods will achieve that.
You can remove them or leave them. Either way will not hurt the plant nor affect its growth. You can coax its growth by adding a bit of balanced fertilizer, though these plants usually don't require much in this department.
Can you please tell me why my Wisteria leaves have gone all curly at the present time? Many thanks.
There are several things that could cause this. The most likely culprits are either too little water, a fungus or a pest. I would recommend increasing water and treating the plant with neem oil, which is both a fungicide and a pesticide (and organic).
There is a chance that it is a disease like curly top virus. This is unlikely, but possible.
When and how to prune wisteria?

Three summers ago I bought a wisteria vine and it has yet to bloom any flowers. The vine has grown over my trellis with lots of leaves but no flowers. Very disappointed.

Two weeks ago I bought a wisteria plant. Now all the leaves are falling off. Some of the leaves were a bit mottled. What can be causing this and what can I do about it before it gets bald?
If it's newly planted, it may simply be suffering from a little shock. They normally recover on their own and the leaves will regrow. Make sure it is receiving plenty of water while it establishes its roots.
