Last year I noticed withering leaves and graying flowers. I couldn't decide if it was a fungal or insect problem. I pruned well and sprayed with fungicide. A month later it seemed the same so I sprayed with an
insecticide. Now that it is about to bloom the same problem exists. What to do??
This doesn't sound like insect damage. You might want to consider taking samples of both the leaves and blooms/buds to your area agricultural extension service office for advice.
How far should the bucket go in the ground when planting trumpet vine?
After removing plant from container, position root ball about 2'' below soil level. This will help channel water to the roots when you water.
Our trumpet vine has gotten too big. Should it be pruned back in the fall or spring?
Pruning normally takes place in early spring or fall, but generally spring is preferable. The plant can be severely pruned back to just a few buds if necessary and will come back fine.
We have 3 or 4 separate trumpet vine plants growing along the side of our house next to our neighbor's driveway and have been trying to trellis it without it clinging to the side of our house and ripping off the siding and stripping the paint off. We are thinking of building a sort of pergola or arbor to arch them over the small strip of land between the house and neighbor's driveway. What is the best way to do this and what are the best materials to use in these efforts?
There are a number of free pergola designs that can help get you started. Here are a few: http://freebies.about.com/od/free-plans/tp/free-pergola-plans.htm, http://free.woodworking-plans.org/pergola-plans.html
My red trumpet vines start to bloom but then they just appear to close up or die out. What could be my problem? Plant start two years ago from a friend's plant and his are doing just great. They were not cut back this year. What kind of problem do you think that I have? Thanks.
It sounds like it may be thrips. They can attack the base of the flowers and kill them before they open. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/insects/controlling-thrips.htm
Just bought trumpet vines for my trellises. You state to contain the vine: "dig a hole in the ground and place a sturdy container in the hole, fill with dirt and plant the vine in the container." My question is...what do you consider a sturdy container and how big of a container?
By sturdy we mean not plastic or anything easily breakable. Most people choose large planters, like clay or Polyresin. Just make sure it provides adequate drainage. If you need a large container and you do not care what it looks like, especially since it will be sunk in ground, consider feed troughs at animal feed stores. They are sturdy but not as expensive as a formal planter that size would be. The first two years it was planted in partial shade then I moved it to full sun. It has lots of vine but has never flowered.
