I have a palm plant that was given to me about 2 years ago. The branches are stiff and appear to have tiny thorns that looks to be the start of new leaves towards the bottom of the branches.
This would be a sago palm! This article will help you with their care: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/sago-palm/how-to-care-for-sago-palms.htm
The most likely reasons are water deficit, or fertilizer burn from high salts content in chemical fertilizer . Either of these will cause drying of the tissues at the leaf margins.
Check on your soil moisture and water management. Using a soil moisture meter may help. Discontinue use of any fertilizer with NPK percentages of over 10, best to use a slow release natural fertilizer.
We had a colder winter than normal in SC and both my Sago palms turned brown. I trimmed both and one came back nicely while the other is not sprouting at all. The one that appears dead has sprouted pups from it's base though. Is it dead? Should I dig it up and just plant one of the pups in it's place?
Typically, taking all fronds from a sago is a death sentence. They do not tolerate this, and almost always die, unless there is some new growth. It is very fortunate that they made it through.
They will send out pups in response to a dead or dying plant. These can be left to take over the original. Moving them will likely kill them.
When you have colder weather, it will be best to leave dying fronds until it has enough new growth to gather energy. Cutting them before this, while the tree is still trying to pull nutrients back into the stalk, will leave it with no way to gather energy for new growth.
We are having trouble figuring out what kind of tree this is - the seeds look different from those we could find online of a sago palm. Does anyone know if this is in fact a sago palm or if it’s a different kind of plant? Thank you!!
This is a Bismark Palm. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/bismarck-palm/growing-bismarck-palms.htm
I am including pictures of some of my plants and would appreciate any help you can give me. Should I prune off the yellow leaves and should I fertilize the plants. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
Only prune them if they are completely dead. Do not prune leaves with green still in them. Make sure to move them to a shady location during the heat. This will prevent the occurrence in the future.
Here is an article that will help you to care for these in container: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/sago-palm/how-to-care-for-sago-palms.htm
Thanks for the answer regarding the pruning of my sunburned Sago Palms but you said to move them to protect them from the hot sun. Unfortunately that is not possible because one is on the patio in a very heavy cement pot and the rest are planted in the ground. I'll have to figure out something else.i guess it's ok to fertilize them now since you didn't say not to. Thanks again.
I'm sorry, I did leave that out. For the plants that you cannot move, you will want to put up a shade cloth. This will come in many "shades" but you won't need anything more than 30 percent shade cloth.
I would wait to feed them until next spring. Feeding now can burn them, since they have lost plant material and cannot take up nutrients as fast until it is replaced.
My sago I’ve had for a few months which I transplanted in the spring and has had new growth this year recently started a second round of new growth at the beginning of this month August and after a few weeks of noticing the new growth is coming in an orange-ish yellow color and has not grown very fast as in comparison to two other new sagos I saved from riding and transplanted them around the same time which both have fully bloomed and beautiful new growth
It looks like the start of flower heads. It is hard to tell whether it is male or female, but without both, there will be no seeds.
