My wife's pride and joy, which is planted in the shade house down the side of our house, has been growing for over 20 years and has now reached a height of approx. 2.7m and is now pushing one of the roof panel off the shade house. Can we cut the top out of the ponytail or just remove the panel and let it grow? There is approx. 800mm of leaf growth. Regards John Blatherwick
Yes, the top can be cut off of a ponytail palm and new growth will appear in a month or so. I even read that if you place the cut-off top into the soil, it will develop a root system and grow a new plant.

I'm looking to make a beach terrarium and would like to include a Ponytail Palm. Would it be alright to plant the palm in just sand instead of a sand/peat moss mix?
Though a Ponytail Palm needs a well draining sandy soil, sand alone would not hold up or sustain a Ponytail Palm.
The soil mix need some amount of organic or loamy mix with sand.

We have a ponytail palm that has always been planted outside. Normally it is healthy, but at the moment it has rotten leaves and is dying on tips of branches. Can you help us?
Some aging of leaves are common on the plant. Lower leaves will drop off and new leaves will grow from the top.
If you are watering with conditioned water or over fertilizing salts can build up in the soil and turn the tips of the leaves brown.
Make sure that you are not overwatering your Ponytail and that the soil is well draining.

I have a very big Ponytail plant I've had about 5 years. The last two years it keeps developing a sticky white substance all on leaves into center. I take it off with little blue dawn and rest water and it takes it off but in a week it's coming back. The white stuff falls off it on table and it's very sticky, and ruining my Ponytail plant. Please help me with it.
Your palm is infected by Scale.
Neem Oil can be used to treat the plant.

What is this? Ponytail (elephant) has weird shoots coming out of top. Must have 10. Can you plant and get more or what?
Ponytail palms are propagated via their pups which are smaller versions of itself that sprout from the base of the mother. More information on propagating from pups can be found here:

However you are talking about shoots coming out of the top, not the base. I do not have a photo to go by, but I am pretty certain that this is simply new growth which is a natural process. Sometimes new growth is initiated after the ponytail is pruned.
When they flower, can you use seeds to grow more palms?
Yes, you can!
Allow the seeds to dry on the plant before harvesting.
