We have a cabbage palm which is about 16 ft. We have had it about ten years now and really love the plant but it seems to be dropping its leaves. We always have large flower heads. The leaves turn brown and then we pull them off, as they don't look very nice. If you have any ideas, I would be very grateful. Many thanks Mrs M Collington
This could be a nutrition issue.

I am planning my garden and I am bit confused between different Palms. I plan to plant Majestic palm in ground and Phoenix in pot until someone confused me by saying the Majestic palm that I am planting in ground is actually Phoenix palm. So I am uploading pics of 3 palm trees. Please help me with the names of palms and their max height in pot and ground. I am especially confused between Phoenix palm and Majestic (Ravenea) palm.

Will the roots interfere with pools and cement work?
While most Palms don't have invasive roots, the root systems extend laterally as far as the crown of leaves.
Choose a smaller specimen for areas of concern.
Plant your Palm where lateral root grown is not an issue.
Pygmy Date Palms are often planted around patios due to their smaller size therefore smaller root system.
Living by San Antonio, Texas, how do I provide year round care for my established Silver Medjool Palm? Do I need to prune the branches that have turned gray? The new green frond branches growing out of the top are beautiful and healthy. I've read that the best time to fertilize is Fall and not to water it excessively.
This article will refresh you on the care requirements.

Our landscaper wants to raise soil level 20 " around existing, healthy Mexican Palm Trees. He said he will encase the trunks with 6 " of rock to keep new soil from suffocating trees. Will this harm our Mexican Palms?
It is always risky to mound up soil or mulch around a tree, especially as high as 20 inches. This can lead to root rot and infections on the trunk, and can end up suffocating the roots. Gravel is better than soil, but it will still restrict air flow to the roots somewhat, especially since it will be so deep.
There may be a way to do this without killing the trees by adding perforated pipes around them, in the gravel, to provide aeration.
Another possibility might be to "transplant" the palms- dig them up and plant them in the same location after the soil level is raised- as described in this article:

Palms tend to recover better than other mature trees after transplantation because of their specialized roots.
I live in central alabama and was wondering if you could give me advice on growing the plant in the attached picture. Should I plant outside or leave in pot? Direct sunlight? Thanks! Allison377@bellsouth.net
