My maple tree has peeling bark and light green spots. I lost a pine tree about 12 years ago that had peeling bark. Is this a fungus that can be treated? This tree was pruned about a year and a half ago. This tree is a relatively young tree. It may be 10 years old.
Here is a great article that should help you identify the issue.

(see image) There is mold around circumference base of tree. Much mulch around base and bed. Tried to hose it off. White stuff blew away. However, black/brown stuff EXPLODED into a massive (not kidding) cloud of brown spores (like a puffball does) and traveled with the wind all over the bed. Hosed the mulch/ground down but the very next morning, it was all back (again, not kidding). Big box store said 'too much mulch, scrape it all away and bag and toss it.'and said 'mold likes decaying stuff and water and all you did was 'feed' it.' What about spraying bleach or roundup on it? What can be done?
Lichens and fungus do not generally cause any harm to trees or plants.

have mold on base of red maple. See photo (sent a different one earlier, see that message too for details). How do I get rid of the mold? Thank you.
Lichens and mushroom fungus are not generally harmful to trees or plants.

We have a maple tree that is at least 25 years old. The bark started peeling on the trunk in March. I bought something to spread on the exposed wood. However, the bark continued to peel. The wood seems fine and it is full of beautiful leaves. However, there is what looks like a green mold developing on the outside of the bark on the trunk. Please help me save this tree. It is very special.
Some varieties of maple do have "peeling" barks and are grown for this feature. It is a feature that often takes years to develop. As long as it looks healthy and you do not see any signs of fungus or mold (it will look like a powdery substance) you should not have to worry about the tree. If you are seeing a flaky type mold on the tree, then it is likely lichen. It is not harmful to the plant. Here is more information:

White cotton wool-like small scales presenting on bark of our acers. Please advise of causes if pest and best treatments.
This could be Mealybug, Wooly Aphid or a fungus.
Also sometime lichen can have a white appearance. Lichen is harmless to the tree.
I would treat with Neem Oil. It works as both an insecticide and fungicide so that you are treating both possible problems.

What is the sticky substance that the maple leaves are covered in? It's on my car so I have to wash it frequently. We've lived in Bracebridge for 24 years and this hasn't happened before.
The sticky substance is probably honeydew secreted by either aphids or scale. Here are some articles that discuss both:

I have a maple tree that is losing bark at the base. One area is black, another area has white nasty looking stuff and goes from ground to 18" up the tree. All leaves have turned yellow. Should I have the tree cut down before it infects other trees?
This is likely a canker or fungus disease.
