We planted a Drummondii Maple tree about 10 years ago. We noticed a few years ago that 1 small branch came out with dark green leaves. We just thought that the dominant gene was coming out because the tree was stressed. Watered and fertilized faithfully ever since but this year a huge section is dark green. I have since learned that we should have pruned that smaller section back. How much of this tree can I prune without killing it? The dark green is about 25% of the growth. Thank you.
Here is more information on that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/environmental/variegated-plant-problems.htm
"While the white edged leaves are generally stabile, this cultivar is known to revert to its original green color. If possible, it is advisable that gardeners remove the green leaved limbs otherwise they will take over the canopy as they grow more vigorously than the variegated branches.'' General rule of thumb is to not trim more than 30%. If taking all the green out will leave gaping holes, take as much as possible this year. Finish next year.
Could you give me any tips on caring for my two tiger trees? Do I need to prune them, if so, when?
From other information on this site, it seems that my maple tree may have Cryptosporiopsis canker – The cankers from this fungus will affect young trees and starts out as a small elongated canker that looks as though someone pushed some of the bark into the tree. As the tree grows, the canker will continue to grow. Often, the center of the canker will bleed during the rising of spring sap. That's a start, but now what do I do about it? Thank you! B. J.
Here is a link to a nice article about maple canker: http://learningstore.uwex.edu/assets/pdfs/A2532.pdf
What caused cracks that run down the trunk of young red maple (autumn flame)? My tree, planted 3 years ago and now about 30 ft. tall, has cracks in the trunk that look like scatches. The bark is separating from the trunk somewhat. What should I do?
Hopefully this article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/maple/maple-tree-bark-disease.htm
I have an acer tree that has very dark red leaves. It flowered pink flowers in spring and Aug/Sept it bore a dark red grape-like fruit. Could you please tell me what type of acer it is, and do I have to prune or feed it in spring?
there is a line drawing of maple (acer) blooms and seed pods about a quarter down in the article at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_rubrum
All maples have seeds and blooms like this.. I suggest that you take samples of both leaf and fruit to your local agricultural extension office for identification and recommendations on care and feeding.
I have a five year old maple that grew from the seed of a maple. Tree has done quite well over the past five years. Last spring as the tree leafed out a number of the large branches comming out of the trunk started to die, and the buds died. Then in the fall the tree started to develop a red film that started to move upward along the trunk. Not sure what this is. Will it kill this tree? And will it spread to other trees in my yard? Your help is required. Thank you for your help.
I suspect that the tree may have Nectria canker. This article will have more information: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/nectria-canker/ It is normally not fatal, but can weaken the tree so that it is susceptible to other diseases and pests. Treat the tree with a fungicide and keep a close eye on it for other problems.
The squirrels are going at my sugar maple tree in front of my house. The driveway is loaded with broken branches and maple buds. What can I do to stop the squirrels and will it hurt the sugar maples tree?
